I have a not so secret obsession with macaroni and cheese; not the Kraft variety you feed your kids but the gourmet, what-did-you-put-in-this recipe you would find at a nicer restaurant. It might have some jalapeños, definitely bacon, and maybe a sprinkling of smoked gouda. Danny has been known to search for the best mac and cheese on yelp and surprise me with it (because he’s brilliant like that.)
The truth is that I didn’t always know mac and cheese could be so good. Growing up, I had my fair share of the Kraft kind. It was my only reference point and if you asked me what I thought about mac and cheese, I probably would have shrugged my shoulders and said, “It’s alright but it’s not my favorite.” Ask me that same question today and my eyes will definitely light up. I might stop mid sentence to ask, “What exactly are we talking about?” At some point I was introduced to what mac and cheese could be and it changed my expectations.
There are so many bad examples and failed marriages out there that I find people often relate to the idea of a good marriage the same way I once did to gourmet mac and cheese; it just isn’t in their frame of reference. While there are a lot of good practices that go into making a marriage fulfilling and enjoyable to both people, we have found that a lot of people just aren’t inspired to do the hard work that is required to put them into place. I think it’s because they don’t really know how good a great marriage can be.
If you haven’t ever tasted smoked gouda in mac and cheese then it might seem like too much work to find it at the store and make the recipe from scratch when you could just make the one in the box. And if you’ve never experienced what it is like to have a great marriage then laying down your life and loving the other person more than yourself might seem like insanity.
It’s why you need to get around some great marriages. The secret sauce of having a great marriage is understanding that it’s possible. When you get around other couples, you hear how God has helped them overcome struggles and difficulties to create something beautiful. He takes two individuals and intertwines their lives into one. In doing so, God casts a reflection of Himself and His heart towards us into the very purpose of marriage.
You might have a great marriage or maybe you’re in a difficult season. Either way, I invite you to come out to our Marriage Real Talk event this Saturday at the church offices. We are praying that you will meet some other couples who will inspire you or find a couple you can encourage in their journey. God gave us each other to help us become who we need to be. Just like someone introduced me to gourmet mac and cheese and it changed my life, there could be that same kind of experience for you that would drastically affect your marriage.
So come and join us this Saturday. It’s a free event from 9-10:30 at the church offices.
