Remember the days when the phone would ring endlessly without going to voicemail? It was back when phones were attached to the wall and a leash kept you from walking off with it and randomly leaving it under a pillow where it would take hours to find when you started missing it. Back in those days it wasn’t too uncommon to hear a phone ring and ring and ring…and ring. The other person would patiently wait on the other end for someone to walk by and pick up the receiver.

Being called by God is a little like that. He designed you with and for a purpose. You were not an accident. No matter how much your life might feel like a train derailed from the tracks, God’s purpose for your life refuses to be nullified.

For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn. Romans 11:29

God is holding the phone in His hand as the ringtone chimes over and over again, waiting for the moment when you pick up and engage in His calling on your life.

Recognizing that YOU are called by God changes everything. It moves you from the position of a beggar to the status of royalty. Instead of crying out for all that you need, you begin to overflow with more than enough for other people around you.

There is a story in Acts 3 about a lame beggar. He is sitting beside the gate to the temple asking for money. Two of Jesus’ followers, Peter and John, notice him. If they had given him their spare change and moved on we never would have heard the story. It would have been ordinary, typical, what everyone expected to happen. But that isn’t what took place.

Peter and John stop and admit that they have no finances to contribute. Instead they offer the man an introduction to the Healer. The man is immediately made whole and his life turned upside down. He is a beggar no more. In a moment, he went from having need define his life to having the Healer mark his existence.

God doesn’t want to just give you the answers to all your problems, He wants to BE the answer. When you approach Him in prayer, it is easy to slip into the mindset of a beggar as we try to twist His arm into giving us everything we think we need. You have been introduced to the Healer, the Provider, the Savior, the Defender, the Strong Tower, the Peace Giver, the Rock, the Refuge, the Shepherd. He is everything you need and more.

When you awaken to that reality, the truth of it enables you to answer the call. Instead of just asking for what we want Him to do, we begin to ask what He has for us to do.

You are called by God to be the answer to someone else’s prayer. Pray for the needs in your life. God cares about each and every one of them. But don’t forget to pick up the phone and let God tell you the purpose and plans for your life to be blessing to the world around you.

Often times, we spend our prayer time asking for what we think we need instead of listening for how God wants to transform us. The answer to your prayer might be different than what you were thinking but if you trust God, He will take your life from begging on the side of the road to walking out a purpose beyond anything you imagined to be possible.

Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” Acts 3:6
