Warm weather was just barely making its seasonal debut in Central Oregon when Pastors Steve and Taunia Meistrell drove into town and asked us to move back to the Treasure Valley and take a position as youth pastors in their young church. Honestly, the offer surprised us. We had never thought of ourselves as youth pastors. Even our close friends and family found the idea of us as youth pastors slightly comical. “Aren’t youth pastors supposed to be super trendy and hyper relational?” they asked. And at that moment, a value of team ministry was born.
We knew we weren’t celebrity preachers. No matter how hard we tried, we weren’t going to be coolest pastors out there. While we might not be the best, the smartest, or the funniest…we wanted to build the best team we could. In gathering and equipping and releasing leaders to lead, we realized that the team could be what we could never be on our own. Our shared strength enabled God to move through us and impact youth in ways we couldn’t have imagined.
Teamwork is the only way we want to do ministry. A team of individuals unified by a shared vision, common values, and an identified strategy can accomplish amazing feats. Each contribution to the team is multiplied exponentially by the people to the left and right. As Phil Jackson has said, “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.”
There are a lot of obstacles to creating a culture of teamwork. Proverbs 14:4 tells us, “Where no oxen are, the manger is clean, but much revenue comes from the strength of the ox.” Basically, the more workers you gather, the more poop you have to deal with. Us people are messy. Our relationships are messy. Working together is messy. Which is why we wanted to state clearly in our core values that we are committed to overcoming the obstacles in order to do ministry as a team.
Sun City Church will be a team of teams. Starting with the eldership team, we want to create a culture of teamwork. From the Sound Team, to the Worship Team, to the Sun City Kids Team, to the Hospitality Team, to the Proof Reading Team…We are better together.
